The Learning Process – Learning and Unlearning
Critical in a successful learning cycle is the concept of ‘learning and unlearning’. Because men are creatures of habits, old habits die hard. Already deeply ingrained in the subconscious of our minds, we need help in consciously ‘unlearning’ them and replacing them with the new learning.
For example, if we are in a habit of anger outbursts whenever something offensive triggers, we need to ‘unlearn’ that reaction and respond in a new way of handling the incident. We can then replace the old ways with new thinking and new ways of doing it. Of course, this requires a systematic and consistent effort to follow along. Overtime, these new patterns become a habit. In the long run, new habits become a part of the person’s character and his behaviour would have been completely modified.
